Many upcoming AR solutions need Lasers. Not for the coherent beam (that's an issue many applications need to overcome), but instead to utilize the narrow FWHM (Full-Width Half Max) spectral emissions. The narrow range of wavelengths is required for thewavefront interference-effect, key to holographic image re-construction, and for the selective pass/reflect bandwidth mirrors used in upcoming Augmented Reality headsets that project holographic virtual images. However as recent news reveals, products with Lasers come with the very real risk of injuries (and eye-damage risk warning labels), and the speckle interference artifacts of highly spatial/temporal-coherent Laser light sources are a challenge for every Laser-based design. What's desirable for many solutions is a narrow FWHM light source, in a small, low-power, LED package, with wide or narrow angle-of-radiance, and without the side-effects of highly-coherent Laser Diode light-source. However, to date, only Lasers could produce narrow (2~5nm FWHM) emission profiles. The best LED's have been 19nm (Blue) ~ 35nm (Green), and tuning the bandgap for center wavelength is extremely difficult also sacrifices efficiency. While Red & Green Quantum Dots are highly tuneable, but even they have been limited to the 25~35nm range, even with "best" (toxic) heavy metal dots.

PixelDisplay is introducing a whole new realm of better alternatives : Inorganic LED's with 2~50nm tuneable FWHM, tuneable wavelength primaries. All the benefits of an LED : small package, front or side-emitting, lower-cost, no speckle issues, no eye-damage warning labels, fully ROHS (no heavy metals), and importantly : emitting multiple primaries from a single chip. Saving space, power, and importantly : removing the optical mixing complexity of 3 spatially-separate junctions. Excellent for achieving wide gamut, eye-damage-free AR display applications. And of course, achieving more colors than ever before, without any 'frickin sharks with lasers'.Come see a live demo of our 3 primary, 10nm FWHM, single-junction-LED light-source : on display at SID DisplayWeek I-Zone #7, May 23rd to 25th in Los Angeles California.
